Yesterday, Amy and I welcomed a new addition to our family– say hello to Mr. Sheep/Sheepy! After living with us for four days and functioning as our new alarm clock with his earnest bleating, he will help us ring in Eid al-Adha, also known as Feast of the Sacrifice. Celebrated by Muslims worldwide, this important religious holiday honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Muslims assert that it was Ishmael, not Isaac) as an act of obedience to God. As the parable goes, God intervened and provided Abraham with a sheep to sacrifice instead. So this Friday the medina will sound with the last “baaahs” of hundreds of sheep and in our host families we will feast on lamb kebabs (and other parts of the lamb…).
